Mechanical vs. Ultrasonic: Which Is Right for You?

Benefits of Mechanical Wind Sensors:

  • Accuracy: Wind Monitors are the most accurate wind sensors in the industry to date, which is why they’ve become the gold standard for many agencies.
  • Much Higher Range: Wind Monitors can record wind speeds in excess of 200 mph, a preferred choice when measuring extreme events.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: They are often less expensive than ultrasonic sensors, making them accessible for many users.
  • Low Power Consumption: Mechanical sensors typically require minimal power, often only for data logging and transmission, so they’re a great choice when power sources are limited.
  • Ease of Maintenance: Many mechanical anemometers can be easily serviced by the user. Repairs and calibration can often be accomplished without returning to the manufacturer. Users are able to perform their own calibration using an Anemometer Drive and Vane Angle Bench Stand, so there’s no need for a wind tunnel.

Benefits of Ultrasonic Wind Sensors:

  • High Accuracy and Precision: Ultrasonic sensors offer high accuracy and precision due to their advanced technology. They can measure even the slightest changes in wind speed and direction.
  • No Moving Parts: Since they have no moving parts, ultrasonic sensors are less prone to wear and tear.
  • Rapid Response Time: Ultrasonic sensors can provide real-time data with minimal delay, making them ideal for applications requiring instant feedback.
  • All-Weather Operation: These sensors perform well in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, high humidity, and precipitation. With optional heaters installed, they can withstand frigid temperatures as well.

Wind Sensors for Every Application

Mechanical Wind Sensors

Wind Monitor:

The Wind Monitor™ offers the most accurate wind speed and direction readings across the widest available range. Constructed from UV-stabilized plastic, stainless steel, and anodized aluminum, it combines durability and corrosion resistance with lightweight accuracy to endure even the harshest conditions.

Gill Propeller:

The Gill Propeller Anemometer is a precise, single-axis wind sensor. It uses a quick-response propeller and a high-quality sensor to produce a DC voltage directly proportional to air speed. While it can detect airflow from any direction, it only measures the wind parallel to its rotation axis.

Gill 3-Cup Anemometer:

The Gill 3-Cup Anemometer is a classic sensor for measuring horizontal wind speed. Its three UV-resistant cups are connected to a high-quality sensor that generates a DC voltage directly proportional to the wind’s speed.

Wind Sentry Anemometer & Vane:

The Wind Sentry® Anemometer & Vane measures both horizontal wind speed and direction through the use of a vane attached to a precision potentiometer inside an internal housing.

Ultrasonic Wind Sensor

Our ultrasonic wind anemometer accurately measures horizontal wind speed and direction. It’s lightweight, compact, and built with durable, corrosion-resistant materials. The sensitive ultrasonic sensors are housed in a sleek design, and each unit is wind tunnel tested and calibrated for precise performance across a wide range of conditions.
